Kim Kardashian interview
By E.C. Gladstone

Many see Kim Kardashian as a one-dimension media personality. But after having talked with her and seen her in work publicity modes, I have a different opinion. I think Kardashian has the insight and drive to go as far as she wants to: the next Oprah, perhaps. Don’t believe me? Read on…

EG: Everyone seems to know so much about you…

KK: But it’s so wrong.

EG: It seems like you life is your job

KK: That’s what I should say, when people say ‘what’s your job, what do you do? “my life’

EG: We’re here at a photo shoot—something that to me seems like a mixture of tedium and anxiety. And you you’ve said you love them.

KK: If I could do it every day I would. I have a book for my house, on my coffee table, my photos printed out 11×14. I’m not vain at all! I look at pictures I did years ago. I used to model as a kid, 7-8, I would do the Barbie ad campaigns. I have pictures of me at Venice Beach roller skating with all the Barbie girls. The girl from Wonder Years, Winnie [Danica McKellar] she would do it.

EG: I’ve read many places that you’re a big bowling fan. Is that serious?

KK: I really am into bowling. I went last week. I like Lucky Strike [in Hollywood], but I also like Pins in the Valley, connected to Jerry’s Deli. I got everyone for Christmas their own ball last year. I got my boyfriend [Reggie Bush] a clear ball with a skull in it, cracked with blood dripping. I got my sister a black and white swirly thing…

EG: When did u become obsessed with bowling?

KK: It’s kind of the thing that Reggie and I do together, especially in New Orleans. We have bowing parties, we make up teams. You know what I’m going to do for Christmas this year? I’m going to get everyone bowling shirts, make up teams, girls against boys or something. I became obsessed with bowling when I worked at my dad’s office on Ventura Blvd. next to Pins, I worked there for 7 years, and one of my jobs is I had to pick up my brother from school. He went to Buckley right across the street, so I had to take him to Jerry’s and he had to do his homework before he could go bowling. So every single day, he would go bowling until my dad was ready to take him home. So my brother is like the best bowler ever. I had to go back to work so I couldn’t really bowl, but I’d sneak it in every once in a while.

EG: You were doing music licensing with your dad’s business, Movie Tunes, you had this whole other life, a career going, then you were a stylist, got married, then all of a sudden you started getting noticed for…

KK: Odd things. Going on dates with people, hanging out with people.

EG: You could’ve just said ‘that’s not my life,’ but instead you decided to go with it.

KK: I decided, I felt like opportunities were coming my way, people were asking ‘hey, will you shoot the cover of this magazine…’ I don’t really get it, why do you want me? I don’t act, I don’t sing. And I sat down with my mom and said what should I do? I would love to model. Girls always dream of modeling…

EG: And you had done it as a kid

KK: Yeah, but they made me stop for school. And I was working in my dad’s office, things I was doing were deadline based, and I’d be ebaying all these clothes. I’m so into fashion, all my friends are into fashion, and this whole lifestyle is very fashion driven. That’s what I love to do. Before I did anything I had a closet full of stuff with the tags on, and my sisters would be like ‘where are you going?’ And I said, one day I’m gonna have somewhere this will be perfect for… I had this vision. So when this opportunity came up to be a spokesperson for a jeans company, and I hadn’t done anything, I said ‘why not?’ It’s financially a good move, why wouldn’t I do it, one photo shoot’s more than my whole [annual] salary at my dad’s company.

Kim Kardashian interview
By E.C. Gladstone

EG: I think people assume that you’re a trust fund baby…

KK: I was cut off when I was 18, I started working when I was 15…of course [people] assuime the opposite. My dad, his parents were well off, but they came from Armenia, and they had to work in the meat packing business, My dad and his brother went to college at USC and got a great education, my dad went to law school in San Diego, and they worked. I grew up in this life of privelege, and I knew it, but I also knew if I wanted to keep it up, I had to do it myself, because my parents aren’t [going to]. We had no credit cards—my dad would never give us a credit card! That was my birthday present, that I could use my dad’s credit card. I’ve always known what it’s like to work, I’ve had a job since I was 15. Before my dad gave us our cars, he made us sign contracts—we had to wash it once a week, if we hit, we paid for it—and I bumped into someone in traffic, my dad was out of town, a week after I got my car, so I got a job working in a clothing store to pay for my first car accident.

EG: How has the experience of being on ‘Dancing With The Stars’ been?

KK: I thought that I wouldn’t care as much, and now I’m taking it so personally its way more intense than I thought it would be. We rehearse four hours a day.

EG: Who’s idea was it to dance to Baby Got Back?

KK: It was the producers. They said what do you think and I said ‘hey I would’ve chosen it if I knew it was an option.’ Hey, if I cant make fun of myself, who can?

EG: How is your toe?

KK: My toe is fine, it obviously was blown out of proportion. It was a huge cut, it was really scary knowing that I had to put these shoes on. It was tough, but it’s healed and I’m not going to let it stop me. I was right in Vegas for Pussycat Dolls and then I went straight to New York, it happened in New York.

EG: How did you like performing with the Pussycat Dolls in Vegas?

KK: It was great. Robin Antin is just a genius. It was nerve wracking though, I’d never performed. They definitely helped me. They inspire me, they’re so hot and sexy. I told [Robin] I need to come out of the shell.

EG: What made you think you could do it?

KK: I didn’t even think I could do it. But the opportunity came up, and I wanted to do it just to challenge myself.

EG: You weren’t afraid of the chance you could look like an idiot?

KK: No, you cant be afraid of that. You just have to be confident, and work hard.

EG: Have you always been confident or become more so?

KK: This is definitely helping me change, because I was not a confident person. I never danced before…

EG: Are you a shy person by nature?

KK: I am extremely shy, and I think that people probably don’t get that. I’ve obviously done photo shoots, even Playboy… For some reason, at photo shoots I become a different person. I love them. But when it comes to personality, that I have to bring forward, I’m so used to being surrounded by these bold personalities–there’s so many in my family—that I’m the observer that just sits there. Now the fact that I’m doing Dancing By The Stars, all by myself, and I have to perform, I’m even nervous in rehearsals. … I hope that I can bring out my inner J-Lo.

EG: I was looking at your blog…its very open and real, not just promotional

KK: I was tired of seeing all these websites, like on myspace where people pretend to be you, and I said ‘no one has it right.’ I just wanted to connect to my fans. People assume I’m a certain way, that I’m a party girl—I don’t even drink alcohol. Hate it. Never have. I had two sips of a margarita last night at dinner and I said ‘I’m drunk!’ They were all laughing at me.

EG: Aren’t clubs really boring when your not drunk?

KK: I love to dress up! But you’ll never catch me at an afterparty, I’m just not that girl. I’ll dress up with all my friends. I work during the day, if I’m not doing this, I have stores to run—I have to go once a week, all my mail goes there, I kind of do all the buying, in the back office. I don’t work on the floor. We’ve had to have security now, ‘cause it does get a little intense. My sisters are there every day. Kourtney used to be on the floor, now she’s in the back, ‘cause she has work to do, It gets a little bit frustrating when she has to work, then get up and take pictures every 5 seconds. She’s not as into it as the rest of us, she’s more into the work. Khloe is outspoken but silly, Kourtney is more outspoken than Khloe, but her delivery is very harsh, but that’s Kourtney, and we love her for that.

EG: So what’s your favorite reality show?

KK: Keeping Up With The Kardashians

EG: Do you really watch it?

KK: Yeah. We edit it… what I like to watch about it is some of the stuff I don’t know my sisters have shot, and I’ll watch it and say ‘where was I? they’re having so much fun without me!

EG: Do you like seeing yourself on camera? Are you self-critical?

KK: Not in a reality show. In a movie, it’s so much more hard.

EG: How would you describe your own sense of style?

KK: I think my sense of style is evolving. I’m definitely becoming a little more ‘effortlessly chic,’ I’m trying to be a little more funky, kind of mix J-Lo and Rhianna. Before I was more into the tight dresses and showing off my curves. Now I feel like,’been there done that,’ kind of over it. I’m figuring out ways to be sexy without having to flaunt it.

EG: What’s on your ipod?

KK: I love Rhianna, I love Jennifer Lopez, Kanye West, there’s a lot I love, I love Carrie Underwood, Kelli Clarkson. I picked the Pink Panther theme for my first dance because that was one of my dad’s favorite movies.

EG: Tell me about the perfume you’re bringing out.

KK: I wore the same scent for seven years and I wanted to switch it and couldn’t find anything I loved. I’ve always loved perfume. I remember when I was a kid, I thought perfume was just picking flowers and putting them in a blender. And my sisters and I were just itching everywhere! It’s been a huge passion of mine to create my own perfume. The deal’s done, they came to us. This is like the perfect thing for me to do right now. Its with New Wave fragrances, the guy that did the Paris Hilton perfume, and on his own, the Christian Audigier perfume, lots of clothing line perfumes, which is something my store wants to sell for itself. They’ve got great promotion, they’ve been really helpful in helping me pick the right scent. I’ve been to New York 3 times in the lab. When something is pure, it’s completely different…

Kim Kardashian interview
By E.C. Gladstone

EG: How did you decide the scent, in terms of what was marketable vs. what you would wear?

KK: I put samples of both the lighter one that I thought people might like better and the one that I liked better in my store, and I’m having everyone I know smell it. I thought people would like the lighter scent, and I think they really are. I only do things if I really wear it. I need a new scent for me. See if you like number seven or number nine.

EG: Seven or nine? Which of those is your lucky number?

KK: Neither. Six is.

EG: Do you feel you have more male fans or female?

KK: I used to have more male fans, and then it totally turned. Once the show aired and people saw who I was, girls can relate. So now I have a total female audience, or a little of both.

EG: Did it take some getting used to having cameras following you around?

KK: Not too tough. Obviously when there’s a huge camera in your face and you’re upset about something… But we made a decision as a family that we’re going to show everything that’s real and that’s going on. Otherwise we know that if it’s not authentic, people will know that. So we made a family decision to go full force with it.

EG: So, even though you have that control, you still feel people get a lot of things wrong.

KK: It’s funny, on the show they do show me being a bit of a diva, but in reality I don’t think that I really am. They want to talk about stupid plastic surgery stuff–I’ve said a dozens of times, ‘No, its not true.’

EG: And you’ve been candid about what you have done.

KK: I haven’t really done anything. If I had, I’d talk about it. I’ll talk about weight stuff. I’m not afraid of it. One day I’ll definitely need it. I’m not against it. Especially after I kids, I’ll need a lift.

EG: What’s the wackiest shit that people have come up with?

KK: That I have a fake butt. Feel it. I wish it was. Seriously, I do. People contradict themselves, first they’re like ‘you’re so fat and full of cellulite,’ they they’re like ‘you’re butt is so fake.’ Honey if my butt was fake, it would be hard as a rock.

EG: You did lose some weight earlier this year…

KK: When I first started working with stylists, they would bring me [size] 6s and 8s, but I’m really a 2 or 4. When people meet me they always say ‘I didn’t know you were so small.’ Like I definitely have a big butt, I get it, but its really not what people make it out to be. And I’m so much more petite than people think. I lost five pounds and people are like ‘oh my god she had this huge weight loss!’ And I see it, cause I am small, but kind of shocking to me that I got all this attention. I was always wearing tight things, so I guess it looks big when I wear certain things. I was into showing it off. Now I’m kind of over that. People ask me questions on my blog, someone asked me what size jeans I wore, and I said 27. and it was like I started world war III. So I tried on a size 26 and two 27s, and my sister and I were laughing so hard. Why would I lie about my jeans size? I wouldn’t let the camera leave me. So people wouldn’t say I cut the tag out. It’s just funny they think I lie in the first place. I’m either lying or I’ve had plastic surgery. It’s like the stereotype that if I’m in a nightclub I must be wasted, and I don’t even drink. People make up this whole life that they think I live, and obviously you see me out, so I do go out. But isn’t that what people my age do, hang out with their friends? I should be able to do what I want without getting a wild reputation.

EG: How did you and Reggie meet?

KK: Matt Leinert. He is Reggie’s best friend and he was dating my best friend, Paris. He introduced us.

EG: And you instantly hit it off?

KK: No, it took about a year. Which is probably better. We stayed friends for a while. Everyone says it’s always better to start off as friends first, but I don’t think most people take the time to do that. Reggie’s always been supportive through everything I’ve done, and he’s always loved me no matter what.

EG: Is he different from the men you’ve been with in the past?

KK: Oh, he’s totally different. He’s loved me like no one’s ever loved me before. He just doesn’t care about anything else but me. In this crazy world we live in, he’s just a good guy. I’ve never had the good guy and the cute guy. It’s always been the bad guy who’s even still not so cute!
EG: So you definitely want kids?

KK: Of course, I want four.

EG: You better get started.

KK: I’m really hoping that after dancing, I’ll really get in shape and have more definition and tone. The better shape you’re in before you have kids, the easier it is to get back in shape after. And Reggie is not the kind of guy to just sit around and let it go. So, after we get married, we’ll have kids. I’ll be pregnant by the time I’m 30…hopefully.

EG: Being divorced, that must make you more gunshy about going for it again.

KK: It definitely has made me more leery in relationships. I’m a completely different person now than I was then. I was always the person in high school who said I’m gonna be the first one married, I’m going to be married in college, just wait and see. And I was. But I wasn’t in the right space in my life. I’m a totally different person. I wouldn’t stand for half of the stuff that I did. Life is all about timing. Now is the right time and now is the right person.

EG: You know he’s the right person?

KK: Oh yeah, this is it for me.

EG: So you guys are talking about it?

KK: We always talk about it, we’re both hopeless romantics, I’ve turned him into one. Its definitely something we’ve talked about and where we’re heading in life. If we ever get a moment to breathe.

EG: Are you a big wedding type person?

KK: Oh yeah. I eloped in Vegas before.

EG: Do you and Brody compare notes on your shows?

KK: No, but we’re very supportive of each other. We met when I was 10 and he was 5, and it’s so funny to see where our lives are at right now. It’s good to have a such an extended family, pretty much everyone in our family at some point or another has had their own reality show. It’s pretty funny.

EG: My fave moment on your show was when you and Bruce—the former Olympian–are working out, and he’s trying to tell you what to do, and you’re like ‘you don’t know what you’re talking about.’

KK: When we were kids… we never looked at him that way. And now, he never works out! We’ve never seen him do that, we’ve just seen pictures of him in really good shape.

EG: So you have an air of suspicion about the whole thing? Like, did we really land on the moon?

KK: Exactly.

EG: Well I have to tell you, I’m old enough to say I watched him win the medals on TV.

KK: Really? So it is true! No, we’ve seen the medals. But we’ve never seen that side of him, My mom and my dad have four kids, Bruce had four kids, she had three girls and a boy, he had three boys and a girl. Then they got married and had two little ones together. Eight is not enough! So they had 10. When we met Bruce, he had these boys, and we had never been around boys before, except our little brother, who we would dress up like a little girl anyway, like he was our little doll. He was seven years younger than me. Imagine the 8 of us living in one house together—the first year we couldn’t stay away from each other.

EG: Would your sisters fight as much if there weren’t cameras around?

KK: More. We have to tone it down sometimes. They are always bickering, slapping, hitting. Its so bizarre they are the age they are and fight the way they do. It’s unbelievable. They fight over really stupid things.

EG: How do you think of yourself, as an entertainer?

KK: I think of my self… at the end of the day, all this is fun, but I think of myself more as a mom one day, and more of a family girl. I’m definitely a business person, but more of an entrepreneur. When I think of the future, definitely being a mom and living more that kind of life. I definitely want to do fashion design and do a bunch of stuff, but definitely more a businesswoman than entertainer. I just want to do it all. Whatever is fun is what I want to do. So if a movie role comes along that I think would be so much fun, then I would absolutely love to do it.

EG: How much are you focusing on that? Taking acting classes?

KK: I did, I took a few. They’re really intimidating. It’s hard. I really enjoyed the movie I did, it was fun and light. It was scary at first but not too scary.

EG: Did you actually do the singing in Disaster Movie?

KK: I did. Some people did, some didn’t. They used me [i.e. her vocal track].

EG: What’s your prize possession?

KK: A dress shirt that my dad wore that I have in my closet, that still smells like him.

EG: You really still miss your dad?

KK: Of course.

EG: Were you closer to him than your sisters and brother?

KK: We all were as close, we all had different relationships with him. All of us lived with him at different points in our lives.

EG: You don’t seem to be too affected by people judging you.

KK: No. I used to be, not anymore. I don’t have time for it.

EG: You feel comfortable having people know so much about your life?

KK: Yeah, I’m a pretty open person. Probably way too open.

EG: Anything you wish people knew more about?

KK: People take bits and pieces of what they want to know. It seems like they’re picking the wrong things. They don’t know that I’m super shy—

EG: It’s pretty hard to believe, Kim.

KK: Exactly. I’ve done some pretty unshy things,. But that’s who I am. I wish people would see a little more of who I am, and that’s why I did my blog.

EG: What do you value most in a friend?

KK: I value honesty, probably the most.

EG: Is it hard once you become more public being able to trust people?

KK: Definitely, you see a bunch of fake people and you never know what to do and who to trust. Thankfully I have enough sisters and brothers to be all the friends I need for the rest of my life.

EG: When do you sleep Kim?

KK: I actually go to sleep pretty early, I’m definitely asleep before midnight. Last week I was up by 5,this week it’s 7. Everyone’s like ‘what do you do, what’s your job?’ I have too many! I love to dress up–when I have a cute outfit on, I have to go out somewhere. But people always take that the wrong way, that I’m out all night partying. I literally get into bed grab the remote and I’m asleep before I even push the button.
